(ECNS) -- The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China has issued a new standard for urban public toilet design, as World Toilet Day falls on Saturday.
With the rapid development of urbanization and continuous population growth, the number of public toilets has become insufficient, and the lack of female toilets is particularly acute, says the ministry.
The new standard demands that toilet proportions for females and males should be increased to three to two, while in crowded areas the figure should be two to one.
The new standard is based on thorough analysis of about 726,000 people, according to the ministry.
It will be implemented on Dec. 1, 2016.
