(ECNS) -- The customs authority of Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong Province has seized dozens of live animals smuggled into China by post.

The animals included four snakes, 53 scorpions and one frog.

Some of the animals had been placed in plastic bottles or bags. It is the first time Guangzhou Customs has found so many animals hidden in mail packages this way.

The animals may carry bacteria or viruses dangerous to human beings, according to customs.

It is illegal to bring live animals into China without declaring them to customs authorities and submitting to pass quarantine inspections.
