(ECNS) -- Health experts warn overuse of cellphones could distract people's attention and lead to a weakened cognitive ability some term "digital dementia", Yanzhao Evening News reports.
Su Zhiwei, director of the encephalopathy division at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Hebei Province, said heavy users of cellphones are more vulnerable to cervical spondylosis, failing eyesight, as well as poor performance in memory and writing according to his studies.
Wu Yanmin, a doctor from the People's Hospital of Shijiazhuang, and He Yifang, an associate professor with Hebei Medical University, agreed that reading by cellphone will affect a person's memory.
A driving school in Hebei province has opened reading zones to encourage students to put aside their cellphones during breaks to help retain their attention span during driving practice.
Similarly, Chongqing Technology and Business University has made it easy for students to read newspapers or magazines on campus and called on students to refrain from indulging in handheld devices.
