(ECNS) – A "tiger mother" who graduated from China's prestigious Peking University has sparked controversy online for a daily schedule she has set for her nine-year-old son, the Beijing Times reported on Friday.

According to the schedule, the boy has to study about 18 hours a day, getting up at 5 a.m. and going to bed at 11 p.m.

The 30-year-old mother responded to questioning and criticism in a confident and calm manner, saying her own father, who used to be a soldier, had educated her in a similar way. She said she had no problem with her "tiger father" and succeeded in entering Peking University.

She was quoted by the newspaper as saying: "You must set a good goal for your child, whether it is Peking University, Tsinghua University, or Yale. The child will only be motivated to study hard when there is a goal good enough to pursue."

She said six hours sleep a night was enough for her son, who never fell asleep in class. Moreover, when he receives good grades on exams, she gives him a break from the tight schedule.
