(ECNS) -- Popular Chinese social networking and microblogging site Sina Weibo has delayed a plan to scrap its 140-character limit.
Sina Weibo said earlier that the service would begin testing posts of up to 2,000 characters for "senior users" and developers starting January 28, and rolling out to all users exactly a month later.
But days after the scheduled date, ordinary users couldn't create posts of more than 140 characters, the Beijing Daily reported.
Sina Weibo said the new service is still being tested and that it takes time to halt the text limit for all users.
So far the new service is open only to membership users.
After the limit is canceled, users will still only see 140 characters per message in their feeds. They must click a link to show the whole post if it exceeds the original character limit.
According to Sina Weibo's report, active monthly users in December 2015 grew 34 percent year on year to 236 million, 83 percent of which were mobile users. Average daily active users in December 2015 grew 32 percent year on year to 106 million.
Its net revenues increased 42 percent year on year to $149 million.
Sina Weibo CEO Wang Gaofei said more tools will be introduced in 2016 to help produce content, especially in short-video and long text form.
