(ECNS) -- The use of osprey in fishing has been made illegal in Chengdu, a blow to the ancient craft that is still popular among some locals, Chengdu Commercial Daily reports.
According to measures adopted in Chengdu Fisheries Law, osprey are prohibited from being used for fishing in open water, yet locals can ask the provincial fishery administration for approval under special circumstances.
Tang Weijun, a fisherman in Xinshuizhan Village, got the first infringement notice due to illegal fishing during the closed season between Feb. 1 and April 30, the report said.
Tang said fishing with osprey is an old tradition in his village. He learned the skill from his father when he was young. The birds are his "right-hand men when fishing."
In addition to fishing, osprey are also used in performances during Dragon Boat Festival -- playing in the water amid loud cheers from the audience.
A large raptor that can reach more than 60cm in length with a wingspan of 180cm, the osprey is also known as the cormorant.
