(ECNS) -- A county in East China's Jiangsu Province has suspended production at all chemical factories after some primary students were said to have got nosebleeds.
Several parents in Haian said their children experienced nosebleeds, itching and skin peeling.
One picture showed a boy getting a nosebleed while brushing his teeth.
Strong, irritating odor could be smelt at Chengnan Experimental School, which parents suspected came are from nearby chemical factories. They subsequently gathered to call for an investigation.
The county rushed to declare that all 23 chemical factories in an industrial zone would stop production from April 20. Another five factories were already ordered to do so.
Local authorities said the odor may still exist for a while even after production stops.
In another separate case, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Jiangsu authorities are investigating how 500 students fell ill after attending a school built near a toxic waste dump in Changzhou City, also in the province.
