A video clip shows monks fight in a temple in Yangzhou City, East China's Jiangsu Province.
(ECNS) – Three Buddhist monks who started a scuffle at a temple in Yangzhou in East China's Jiangsu Province have been expelled from the temple, Beijing Times reported on Thursday.
The monks were mid-level leaders at the Ningguo Temple in Yangzhou's Baoying county, the paper said.
They quarreled on April 24 over a trivial management matter and then a scuffle followed, which resulted in minor cuts and bruises, said Master Chunqing, the temple's abbot, in a message on his WeChat Moments on Wednesday.
The abbot said a decision was made on the morning of April 26 to let them go.
Previously, a one-minute video of the scuffle had been circulated online, sparking heated debate. Three monks wrestled one another, with one hitting another hard on the head with a mobile phone, as tourists and other monks tried repeatedly to stop them, it showed.
Before the incident, the monks had had personal grudges against one another, the abbot said.
