(ECNS) -- An aerial bomb found at a construction site in eastern China was so powerful that its explosion created a crater 10 meters in diameter, local media reported.

An excavator happened to dig out the U.S.-made AB-250-54 bomb while workers were building a road in Tancheng County, Shandong Province on May 8.

The bomb, which measured 1.5 meters in length and weighed about 150 kilograms, was dropped during the War of Liberation (1945-1949), or Chinese civil war, but didn't explode, according to military experts.

With the help of Zhang Zhongjian, a police officer in charge of explosive-removal, the device was moved to a pond and detonated on May 11.

Local police urged residents to report the discovery of any explosives as soon as possible.
