(ECNS) -- Xi'an City, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, has introduced official English translations for its five iconic dishes to enhance its brand image, Xi'an Daily reports.
Most famous for its Terracotta Warriors and Horses, the city has produced an array of noodles, bread and dumplings since ancient times.
In the version sanctioned by the city's bureau of quality and technical supervision, the Xi'an meat burger Roujiamo is translated as Rougamo, the flatbread in beef soup Niurou Paomo as Pita bread soaked in beef soup and Qiaomian hele as Hele buckwheat noodles.
The version also includes biangbiang noodles named for biang, the most complex Chinese character with up to 71 strokes, to mimic the sound of flour dough hitting the counter when stretched.
Famed local food Hulutou, a dish made of pork and chicken, keeps the same Chinese name in the official translation.
The bureau also released detailed specifications for making these five foods.
Guang Yangli, director of the bureau, said it took more than a year for famous cooks in Xi'an to come out with standards to guide the production of classic local cuisine.
The bureau added that neither the standards nor English translations are compulsory for producers.
