(ECNS) -- Chongqing aspires to become the home of a new Disney resort in western China, the Chongqing Evening News reported on Tuesday, citing the city's foreign trade and economic relations commission.
Disney had placed the building of another theme park in central or western China on its agenda before kicking off construction of the recently opened Shanghai Disney Resort, according to the commission.
"We pay high attention to the Disney project in West China and are earnestly making preparations for its launch in the city," said the commission. "We have the opportunity and capacity to undertake the project."
The commission made the statement on its official website, in response to a local resident's proposal that the city should take full advantage of commercial entertainment projects to help improve its high-end tourism and entertainment industries, as well as lift the city's international image.
The commission replied that Chongqing had introduced a series of landmark projects, including the Happy Valley theme park and a polar ocean park, which were set to open to visitors by 2017.
