(ECNS) -- The collapse of large toy makers in the Pearl River Delta, a major manufacturing center of China and the world, has given rise to a new form of selling toys in south China's Guangdong Province, reported Hong Kong's newspaper Ming Pao.
According to a company's offer, Barbie Doll toys are 3.5 yuan (52 US cents) per kilogram, Superman and Spiderman, three yuan, and remote-control toys, five yuan.
A staff member said some customers placed orders in tons with the cost ranging from 4,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan per ton.
The toys come from excess inventory products, samples and stockpiled goods from bankrupted factories.
At a well-known wholesale toy market in Chenghai District in Shantou City, a toy company has been selling toys according to how much they weigh since 2012. The business model has spread to many similar companies.
The Pearl River Delta comprises a cluster of cities in Southern China, and overtook Tokyo as the world's largest urban area in terms of both population and land area, the World Bank said in 2015.
Once an export-driven manufacturing base, the Pearl River Delta is losing luster due to higher wages and a shortage of skilled labors.
