Of the injured, the oldest is 55 years old and the youngest 5, with two victims in serious condition, Taipei's firefighting department said Friday.
The explosive appeared to be 15 to 20 centimeters long and looked like a firecracker. It is thought to have caused a blast that engulfed one train car in flames as it was pulling into a station, according to police.
A suspicious man has been identified but further investigation will make it clear whether it was plotted or an accident.
Reports cited witnesses as saying they heard a loud explosion before the train carriage burst into flames. Smoke filled the carriage and terrified passengers started to scream.
There's no surveillance footage from inside the carriage.
While government agencies are investigating the blast, the security level on the island had not been raised to indicate a terrorist attack, and residents were urged to remain calm.
