(ECNS) -- Swedish furniture maker IKEA has finally announced a recall of more than one and a half million potentially hazardous chests of drawers sold in the Chinese mainland.
The company came under fire for initially excluding China from a global recall.
IKEA said it made the decision to recall 1,660,845 of the products after talks with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The dressers to be recalled were products under the Malm brand sold from 1999 to 2016.
It said the dressers could tip over if not attached to a wall and could lead to injury or death of children.
IKEA promised to help fix the dressers free of charge or recall the product with customers receiving a full refund.
IKEA previously refused to recall the products, saying the furniture met Chinese standards and there had been no reported accidents.
Chinese media outlets, including state news agency Xinhua, joined the online outcry over the different treatment of the Chinese market. In its latest editorial, Xinhua said IKEA's arrogance had abused the trust of Chinese consumers again and again.
