(ECNS) -- Swedish furniture company IKEA is continuing to sell controversial chests of drawers in China despite announcing a decision to recall the products after pressure from Chinese consumers.
IKEA said it would recall 1.66 million sets of drawers, manufactured from 1999 to 2016, in China over concerns that they could pose a danger to children if not properly fixed to walls.
But on IKEA's official Chinese website and at the Siyuan Bridge outlet, consumers found the popular Malm chests of drawers still available for purchase, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
An IKEA manager said the company stopped selling the products in North America because they did not meet industry standards in the United States. However, they comply with regulations in China.
A staff member with IKEA's customer service team said the products have no quality issues and the key is to attach them securely to a wall.
But according to a regulation issued by China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, products found to have defects need to be immediately pulled from sale or lease.
