(ECNS) -- China has deployed a liaison officer for police affairs in Rio to help guarantee the safety of Chinese athletes and tourists.
The officer sent by the Ministry of Public Security joined Song Yang, Chinese Consul General to Rio, to meet the press on Aug. 3 as China's national delegation to the Olympic Games hosted the flag-raising ceremony at the Olympic Village.
The officer said he'd made many preparations before his arrival in Rio two months ago.
His duty is mainly to strengthen the contact with Brazil police, to better guarantee the safety of Chinese athletes, tourists, journalists and Chinese citizens there, the officer added.
Song also said that many Chinese governmental departments, besides the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are paying attention to the Olympics.
China issued a safety warning to Chinese people visiting Rio de Janeiro for the Olympics after a spate of thefts and armed robberies. Chinese hurdler Shi Dongpeng said his personal computer was stolen on arrival in Brazil.
