(ECNS) -- Authorities in Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, have seized and destroyed 21 kilograms of frozen human breast milk from Vancouver, Canada.
The breast milk was packaged roughly and stored in small pieces of luggage. After the long flight some had already thawed and was leaking, said quarantine officers at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport.
Passengers need to go through quarantine approval to carry breast milk upon entry, including proper packaging, said the officers, adding that they later destroyed the liquid. It was the first time the airport has seized breast milk.
Shipping of breast milk needs to follow strict guidelines to keep it safe and fresh, otherwise children can get sick or be exposed to infectious diseases, it was added.
