(ECNS) -- In an effort to fight telecom fraud, China will increase punishment for the use of fake base stations from a maximum fine of 5,000 yuan (about $750) to 500,000 yuan.
An amendment to the regulation on control of wireless equipment and satellite networks was approved by the State Council on Thursday, which raises the maximum penalty.
Standard tricks used by criminals to send fraudulent messages through unlicensed operator stations -- using computers to operate as telecom stations and stealing mobile numbers to send promotion messages -- are considered as illegal use of wireless equipment, the amendment said.
People are also forbidden from using radio frequencies or satellites without approval. Illegal use of radio stations and satellite networks will result in newly strengthened sanctions.
Industry insiders said improvements to the legislation would help fight telecom fraud, which has emerged in recent years as a new way to swindle victims.
Statistics show counterfeit operator stations send a vast number of junk messages. Internet security firm Qihoo 360 said in a report that it found more than 1,300 junk messages each day, a main source of telecom fraud.
