(ECNS) -- Police in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing are testing a new weapon to intercept illegal drones at the Nanjing Marathon to be held on Oct. 16.
During a drill near the city's Xuanwu Lake, a police officer pointed a gun-like device at a drone in the sky, interrupting the drone's control and forcing it to drop to the ground.
Xu Yingqiu, director of a local police station, said the device acts as a signal interference and was developed in cooperation with research institutes. It has an effective range up to one kilometer.
Xu said the device was made to prevent the increasing use of unapproved drones at large-scale events.
Local police have called on drone-lovers to stay away from the marathon.
