(ECNS) -- Participants in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) meet during the National Day holiday buried so much trash deep in the sand of Tengger Desert that more than 100 local sanitary workers were needed to clean up the area, Beijing Times reports.
According to recent breaking news online, many participants buried non-biodegradable waste deep in the desert instead ofdisposing of it properly.
The ATV event, initiated by LBLife 10 years ago, saw its 11th meet this year, the paper said. It opened in Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on October 3, and "lasted four to five days," said a worker with the local environmental protection authority.
A participant surnamed Fang said the event brought together about 200,000 to 300,000 people. The organizer had assigned a camping area in Tengger Desert so that drivers and tourists could set up tents there.
"The camping area was very large, but trash bins weren't handily available," he said. Some people took their refuse away by car, while others just littered, it was added.
