(ECNS) -- The southwestern city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province has found that cables used in its subway lines are from the same brand that triggered a quality scandal in Xi'an, capital city of neighboring Shaanxi Province.
Several people have been detained in Xi'an after a whistleblower said that shoddy and inferior materials used in producing the cables could lead to safety risks and "seriously endanger passenger lives."
Investigators in Xi'an said the quality of the cables made by Shaanxi Aokai Cable Co Ltd were not up to standard.
Chengdu Rail Transit Group said the first phase of its subway Line 3 and the second phase of Lines 4 and 7 now under construction used cables from the same company, but after formal bidding procedures.
Quality reports show all cables supplied by the company met technical standards required by the contract, according to the operator. To ensure safety, Chengdu said it is organizing inspections.
Chengdu Rail responded that it is overhauling all the installed cables and will stop any other lines that were scheduled to use the same brand of cables.
Chengdu Rail also said it is ready to cooperate with authorities and deal with the issue in accordance to law, if the supplier is guilty of fraud in providing certificates.
