(ECNS) -- Television dramas and movies cannot be broadcast or released online until they are reviewed and approved, according to a notice from China's top media watchdog.

The notice issued by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television tightened the review process on programs for smaller screens including smart TVs, computers, mobile phones and tablets.

So-called "unabridged versions" or "internet versions" of programs and dramas, which are different from those broadcast by television stations, cannot be carried on small screens without approval, it was stated.

Internet programs, dramas or movies should avoid broadcasting content such as star gossip and "boring games,"the notice said. Shows or programs with fake plots or that could intensify social contradictions, encourage irrational sentiments or mislead the audience cannot be streamed online.

It also called for entertainment reporters to stop spreading gossip and change their focus to reporting on the "excellent moral qualities and artistic accomplishments" of celebrities.

The administration required last year that online video and audio programs should adopt the same standard set for TV programs.
