(ECNS) -- A severely disabled university candidate from Northwest China's Gansu Province might receive physical support and financial assistance from Tsinghua University once admitted to the famed school.
Wei Xiang, who has spina bifida and a meningeal cyst, earned a score of 648 in this year's university entrance exam, or gaokao, and has applied to Tsinghua University in Beijing, one of China's top learning facilities.
Wei's exam results stand him a good chance of admittance according to Xue Jiantuan, who is in charge of Tsinghua's student recruitment in the province.
In an article published online, Wei said he hopes Tsinghua University would provide a dormitory for him and his mother, who takes care of his daily needs. "Because of my physical condition, I cannot live without my mom. Besides, she will have to quit her job to accompany me, which will severely affect our finances," he wrote.
Wei, who has had three surgeries, has lived alone with his mother since his father passed away in 2005. Life is not easy for the small unit.
Liu Zhen, an official with Tsinghua's admission office, told Chinese media many alumni said they would like to provide Wei with financial aid after hearing his story. University President Qiu Yong and Party Secretary Chen Xu also called on related departments to address Wei's case.
Xiang Chun, an official in charge of Tsinghua's property management, told media on June 28 the university had made arrangements to accomodate both Wei and his mom free of charge.
Tsinghua issued a public letter to encourage Wei, saying that even though life may often be affected by sorrow, "you insist on being strong and working hard, winning people's respect and admiration." The letter has since gone viral on Chinese social media.
