(ECNS) - Traditional Chinese Medicine is a minor course being promoted in primary schools in Zhejiang Province, and there are no exams given on the subject, said an official with the local education department.
Textbooks for the course were compiled under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the contents have been reviewed by education authorities, the official said, with the aim of promoting traditional culture.
In April, Zhejiang's elementary schools launched the set of Traditional Chinese Medicine textbooks, which were the first of their kind in China, making the province a pioneer in teaching the subject to pupils in the country. With 36 lessons for fifth-grade students, the textbooks include fundamental knowledge of TCM, acupuncture and massage therapies.
The course has been welcomed by some parents and students. A mother in Jiaxing Province said she hopes the course will help her daughter form healthier living habits, instead of staying in air-conditioned rooms all day.
However, a teacher in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, said it is a good idea, but that some schools lack specialized teachers.
Elementary schools in Wenzhou were looking for good teachers and preparing to start the lessons soon, Chinese media said.
