(ECNS) - HKT, Hong Kong's premier telecommunications service provider, kicked off the 5G Tech Carnival at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Thursday to herald the arrival of a new digital era based on 5G technology.
The event has seven core themes, including 5G and smart cities, mobile solutions, and smart living. It showcases smart city applications and how solutions from HKT can enable ordinary people to lead smarter, safer and healthier lifestyles.
Among the displays are a smart mirror can automatically recognize a person’s appearance and voice as well as systems that allow people to open curtains or turn on lights simply by speaking or operate a washing machine while away from home. In the kitchen, people can watch their favorite TV programs on the refrigerator connected to the Internet.
Some devices in the exhibition can take just seconds or minutes to tell body health indicators, such as fat percentage.
Victor Lam, the Government Chief Information Officer of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said Hong Kong highly values the importance of 5G technology in the development of smart cities. He expects 5G services and applications to be available this year.
The event also includes a conference attended by prominent industry leaders and influencers, as well as device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors and content owners.
