(ECNS) - Chinese online payment platform Alipay started issuing electronic certificates to couples who initially registered their marriages in Fujian, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Chongqing.
Married couples in those five regions need to complete a facial recognition process through the app to get a digital version of their marriage certificates issued by the local civil affairs department.
They can also make a reservation with local authorities to get a replacement of their lost paper certificate or cross-check marriage information.
As a proof of marriage status, the certificate is a necessary legal document in mortgages, house sales, property notarization and children's enrolment in schools.
An official from the governmental affairs office in Zhejiang Province said the electronic version of a marriage certificate can bring many conveniences to residents.
China has been promoting e-governance as the Internet becomes commonplace. Alipay can offer digital versions of more than 90 types of certificates and licenses in 200 cities including electronic social security cards and driver's licenses.
