(ECNS) -- Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing said Wednesday it will lower the minimum age for its passengers from 18 to 16 starting Aug. 22, allowing some minors to use the service independently.
Passengers between 16 and 18 need to designate an emergency contact prior to traveling alone through a car booked via the Didi Chuxing app.
Meanwhile, Didi Chuxing will recommend high-performing drivers, increase safety alerts, and improve supervision over cars transporting minors.
Passengers under 16 still need to travel with an adult when using the Didi Chuxing service.
