(ECNS) -- The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases across the globe has surpassed 3.65 million as of Tuesday, and the virus has claimed more than 256,000 lives, according to the latest tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The number of confirmed cases in the United States reached 1,201,337 as of 6 p.m. (2200 GMT) and the death toll from the disease hit 70,847, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The United Kingdom has overtaken Italy to report the highest death toll from coronavirus in Europe with more than 32,000 deaths, figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday showed.

But some academics have warned that cross-country comparisons are "difficult".

No new domestically transmitted cases of the novel coronavirus disease were reported on Tuesday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said on Wednesday.

Two confirmed cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported in northwest China's Shaanxi Province Tuesday.

By May 5, the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland stands at 82,883, the cumulative death toll at 4,633, and the remaining infections at 339. In addition, 903 asymptomatic patients are under medical observation.

A total of 1,523 confirmed cases have been registered in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Among them, there are 1,040 cumulative cases in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao and 438 in Taiwan.
