(ECNS) -- Cotton sowing was underway in Toksun County, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on Tuesday, with a total of 80,000 mu (about 5,333 hectares) cotton field to be cultivated by unmanned seeders as planned.

Unmanned cotton seeders equipped with the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) have been widely used in the county. They can simultaneously complete filming, laying drip irrigation belts, sowing, and covering, which has greatly improved efficiency while keeping the sowing lines straight.

“I’ve planted about 300 mu of cotton. I used to rely on smaller machines a few years ago, which was inefficient and laborious,” said Wang Fulin, a cotton farmer in Kumishi Town.

“But now I use large machinery. Unmanned seeding and cotton protection, mechanized cotton picking and other technologies have been adopted. These technologies have greatly improved our sowing efficiency and lowered the cost,” said Wang.

According to a cadre of the village where Wang lives, a total of 117 households who grow cotton have already begun sowing since early April. Fifteen large cotton seeders keep working every day, which can cover nearly 3,000 mu a day, and the work is expected to finish before April 20.

Toksun plans to plant 80,000 mu of cotton this year, among which 64,000 mu are in Kumishi town.
