(ECNS) -- A young man from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said he has seen China’s influence during two years working at the United Nations (UN).
Wilson Lai Wai-nam is one of the first batch of five HKSAR youths recommended to the United Nations Junior Professional Programme (JPO). He began working for the UN’s Office on Drug and Crime at the beginning of 2020, charged with anti-graft support and research, which is related to his job in the Independent Commission Against Corruption of HKSAR.
He has already returned to Hong Kong.
“I’ve seen the influence of our country. It plays a role as a great power in many diplomatic affairs, for example, in international communications and coordination. I realized that our country is so powerful in the world,” said Wilson.
The young man born after 1990 said as a Hong Kong civil servant, he has his advantages, such as good knowledge of the rule of law and different political systems, and an international vision.
“Hong Kong is an international-oriented city with professional and international talents, and more civil servants here have the increasing awareness of state as well as a more comprehensive understanding of the country,” said the young man.
This year marks the 25th year of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. On this occasion, the young man said: “Hong Kong’s prosperity has not come easily and I’m sure that with ‘one country, two systems’, the city will embrace more opportunities to give full play to its advantages to embark on a new journey.”
“I hope to utilize my experience in the past two years and do my job well,” said Lai, adding that it is also a way to tell Chinese stories well to the world.
