(ECNS) -- English teacher Eleri Wynne, or Wen Yahui in Chinese, from the U.K. has devoted herself to inspiring students in rural China for many years.
At 18, Wynne was attracted by mysterious Chinese culture when sheread a book introducing China. In 1992, she came to China and became anEnglish teacher in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
"Here is like my home back in the U.K., and I love the Chinese 'human touch'," she said, which is why she decided to stay in China.
Wynne has taught in several Chinese universities over the past 30 years and truly saw the gap and difficulty rural Chinese students faced in learning English.
To bridge the imbalance in education resources between rural and urban, Wynne decided to help students from the countryside in 2014.
“They are as talented as those from urban areas, but they lack of chance,” said Wynne.
She used to teach children in the countryside once a week and each time she drove nearly one hundred kilometers. Sometimes, she lived in the countryside and went to different schools. But as she is getting older, she can only go there once every two or three weeks.
She is glad to do something for China’s rural education though it is not easy. In her eyes, what she has done will at least make rural children know that English is not only a language, but also a tool for communication, thus changing their views on English study.
