(ECNS) -- According to the SEIRS model for infectious disease dynamics, the second peak of the COVID-19 might occur at the end of June, with about 65 million people infected a week, renowned Chinese respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan said on Monday.
An Omicron case can infect more than 30 people, said Zhong at the 2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum held in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
“We have changed our strategy from preventing infection in the past preventing severe diseases now, because it is hard to prevent people from being infected,” he said.
He stressed the importance of vaccine research and development targeting XBB variants.
According to Zhong, two vaccines targeting XBB variants have been initial approved now and another three to four could be approved soon.
“China is able to stay ahead of the world in terms of researching and developing more effective vaccines,” he said.
