(ECNS) -- One of the main things that Latin America could learn from China is the strategy used for poverty elimination, said Marcela Arias, minister at the Permanent Mission of Honduras to the UN and Other International Organizations based in Geneva,in an interview with China News Network.
Arias noted that one of the major goals China has been pursuing in the past years in promoting and protecting human rights is poverty reduction and elimination. Its strategies for eliminating poverty are something worth looking at for countries such as Honduras.
“I think China has made some real efforts in keeping up with human rights standards.”
“That is something that Honduras sincerely looks up to as a country with high indexes of poverty and inequality,” Arias added.
Meanwhile, she expressed her hopes for bilateral cooperation between the two countries that formally established diplomatic relations in March this year.
Honduras formally signed 17 agreements for bilateral cooperation with China during its President Iris Xiomara Castro visit to the country a few days ago, involving investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, people-to-people exchange, among others, she noted.
Infrastructure construction is a main cooperation project under the Belt and Road Initiative framework, especially in the energy field, said Arias, adding that it is one of the main obstacles for Honduras guaranteeing human rights across society.
“We are very eager to initiate this bilateral cooperation,” she said.
