China's museums in numbers

May 18 marks the International Museum Day. Established by the International Council of Museums in 1977, International Museum Day has been an annual celebration embraced by China since its council membership in 1983.

By the end of 2022, China has 6,565 registered museums, with the number increasing by about 200 each year. Over 90 percent of them offer free admission.
