Portugal registered 156 deaths related to COVID-19 and 10,556 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus on Wednesday, the highest daily value of infections since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Directorate General for Health (DGS). The Portuguese Government announced a new nationwide lockdown on the same day starting from Friday, which is similar to the six-week lockdown imposed between March and April last year, in response to the soaring COVID-19 infection rate. Affected by the continuous deterioration epidemic, the streets in Lisbon are virtually empty.
