At the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain some 16 kilometers west of Datong City, Shanxi Province, lie Yungang Grottoes which stretch about a kilometer. The 1,500-year old grotto site is one of the largest of its kind in China. Yungang Grottoes boast 254 caves that host more than 59,000 statues, with the largest measuring 17 meters high and the smallest two centimeters.
The site is seen as an excellent example of rock-out architecture, representing the outstanding achievement of Buddhist cave art of ancient China.
