Beijing (CNS) -- The urban area of Beijing experienced a fierce rainstorm from the night of the 26th to dawn on the 27th. It was accompanied by lightening, thunder, and momentary hailstones. The low-lying Baiwanzhuang South Street was severely waterlogged up to knee-level, with basements flooding, several cars destroyed by a fallen tree, and tens of vehicles immersed in water.

The Beijing Meteorological Station issued a blue rainstorm alert, as well as the yellow hailstone and lightening alert (both top levels) on the night of the 26th. The sudden attack happened around 9:30pm. It was most severe in Zizhuyuan, Haidian District, which got 105mm rainfall, followed by 100mm in Yuyuantan. At 12:30pm, the thunderstorm had not yet subsided.

Rainwater flowed to the low-lying areas and soon caused flooding. Sandbags were piled up in front of some office buildings to block the water.

Usually, late July to early April is the main rainy season in Beijing. Recent days have seen frequent strong convective weather in Beijing, such as rainstorms, strong winds, hailstones, and short-term downpours. The rainfall on the 24th was recorded as the strongest of this year, which unfortunately led to two deaths in the suburbs. The next week will see the continuation of the current weather conditions, predicted the local meteorological office.

On the same evening, North China, Northeast China, the intersection of the Yellow River and Huai River, the intersection of the Yangtze River and Huai River, the Sichuan Basin, Chongqing Municipality, southern South China, and southern Yunnan Province were also troubled by fierce rainfalls, according to the National Meteorological Center.
