Former KMT chairperson expects more communication between Taiwan youths, Chinese mainland

(ECNS) -- Hung Hsiu-chu, former chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, expressed her hope for greater communication between Taiwan's younger generation and the Chinese mainland during an interview with China News Service in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, on Tuesday.

Hung visited many places in Shaanxi, such as Yan’an, Xi’an, and Baoji while attending the Fifth Cross-Strait (Shaanxi) Economic, Trade and Scientific Cooperation Conference that opened on Saturday in Xi’an.

She noted that full play should be given to the advantages of Xi’an, an ancient capital for a few dynasties of Chinese history, promoting communications and cooperation among education and research institutions from the mainland, the Taiwan region and other countries in key areas such as culture, education, and tourism.

She especially encouraged the younger generation in Taiwan to visit Shaanxi to learn about the profound Chinese culture and participate in the development of innovative industries.

During her visit to the Baoji Bronze Ware Museum, she said youths from Taiwan would gain a new perspective if they paid it a visit.

In recent years, exchanges and cooperation between Shaanxi and Taiwan have increased day by day, involving economy and trade, culture, education, science and technology, and many other fields, while attracting more and more Taiwanese businesspeople and enterprises.

As of the end of June 2024, there were 1,062 Taiwan-funded enterprises in Shaanxi, and the total trade volume between it and Taiwan has ranked among the province’s top three in foreign trade for many consecutive years.

“Many industries in the mainland are now undergoing transformation and upgrading. Businesspeople from Taiwan need to learn about the mainland's policies in various aspects, such as environmental protection. Joint efforts can create good results,” Hung said.
