(ECNS) -- Traditional design and practices for building for Chinese wooden arch bridges were included in the list of intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Thursday.
The UNESCO decided to remove the item from the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding and added it to the list of intangible cultural heritage during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee held in Asuncion, Paraguay.
Chinese wooden arch bridges date back over 1000 years. Combining 'beam-weaving' techniques with mortise-and-tenon joints, they provide visually elegant structures with strong mechanical performance.
