(ECNS) -- Shanghai Port has set a new global record in container shipping on Sunday, with the annual container throughput reaching 50 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

The port has ranked as the world’s busiest for 14 consecutive years, leading in annual container throughput. It is expected to secure its top position for the 15th straight year.

Since the beginning of container shipping in 1978, Shanghai Port has seen steady growth in annual container throughput. In 2003, it reached a historic milestone, surpassing 10 million TEUs.

Currently, Shanghai Port operates nearly 350 international routes, connecting over 700 ports across more than 200 countries and regions worldwide.

Besides, Shanghai has ranked among top three leading international shipping centers in the world for five consecutive years. And Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port, the world's biggest automated container terminal, has topped the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for two consecutive years.

Seen as a gateway for China’s opening up and global collaboration as well as a driving force of trade and exchanges, Shanghai Port is also actively pursuing a green transformation.

It now ranks among the top three global ports for bonded liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering. According to port authorities, the next step is to transform the port into a "green energy fueling center."
