China develops high-precision standard materials for carbon monitoring

(ECNS) -- China has made a significant breakthrough in environmental monitoring by developing its first national-level standard materials carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in synthetic air, which meet the high-precision requirements for carbon monitoring in the atmosphere.

The measurement precision of the newly developed CO2 and CH4 c can reach 0.05 percent (equivalent to the change in carbon dioxide concentration caused by a single breath of an adult in a 30-square-meter room) and 0.1 percent respectively.

The annual rate of change in CO2 and CH4 concentrations of global atmosphere is 0.6 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.

To accurately capture these small changes, high-precision standard materials are required to ensure that monitoring results remain accurate and comparable over time and across different locations.

Monitoring carbon dioxide and methane, the two major greenhouse gases produced by human activities, is fundamental to studying trends in greenhouse gas concentration, evaluating the greenhouse effect, and setting benchmarks for emission reduction measures.
