Ups and downs of Sino-U.S. military relations 

From May 15 to 22, Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), visited the U.S. and held talks with Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. On June 3, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in Singapore. From July 9 to 13, Mike Mullen paid a four-day visit to China. As the entire world was believing the Sino-U.S. military relationship was improving, however, in September, the U.S. decided to sell arms to Taiwan and China urged Washington to "take the appropriate course of action".

On December 7, high-ranking military officers from China and the United States met in Beijing for their annual defense consultative talks (DCT). According to analysts, the two countries are trying to maintain a good relationship despite various conflicts.
