Fifty-one female guards of honor of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) made their debut in a military parade marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II on Thursday morning. [Special coverage]
There are three lines of female guards of honor, with 17 soldiers in each line. They have an average height of 1.78 meters and age of 20 years old. Some 88 percent of them hold college degrees.
The servicewomen are the first females in the 63-year history of the PLA guards of honor.
The Beijing Military Area Command selected the first batch of female guards of honor in February 2014. They have been in active service since May last year.
