Indonesia's biennial Multilateral Naval Exercise -- Komodo 2016 has entered its third day. The theme of this year's five-day naval exercise is "readiness and cooperation for peace" and is being conducted around Padang and nearby islands.
The drills aim to improve emergency response capabilities and strengthen humanitarian relief efforts in the Asia Pacific region. The exercises are divided into three stages: port-and-shore activities, maritime drills, and on-shore rescue.
Around 50 vessels from China, Russia, United States, France, Australia and 16 other countries are participating in the exercise. Officers from China's Navy said the exercise promotes cooperation.
"We cooperate well with other countries. We learn from each other through exchanges, in order to improve. These exercises reflect our friendship, which is the foundation for building China's blue water navy," said Wu Shuangwang, officer from Chinese Navy.
