The U.S. Navy 7th Fleet said on Thursday that the remains found by the Royal Malaysian Navy were not those of a USS John S. McCain sailor.
It said the Malaysian navy discovered the remains while searching the area where the U.S. guided-missile destroyer collided with merchant vessel Alnic MC on Monday.
But the U.S. side found the remains were not those of a missing sailor following medical examinations of the remains.
The remains will be returned to the Malaysian authorities.
According to the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet, additional divers from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit had arrived in Singapore to support search efforts within the damaged warship, where divers had found remains.
Multinational search efforts, jointly launched by the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia, continued at sea over an area of approximately 900 square nautical miles around the initial location of the collision, which left 10 sailors missing and five injured.
It added that Indonesian Navy ships joined the search and rescue efforts Thursday morning.
