5.4-magnitude quake strikes Japan's Wakayama Prefecture, no tsunami warning issued

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 struck Wakayama Prefecture in southwest Japan on the Kii Peninsula, the weather agency said Friday.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor's epicenter was located at a latitude of 33.7 degrees north and longitude of 135 degrees east with a depth of 50 km.

The quake registered 4 on Japan's seismic scale which peaks at 7, in some areas of Wakayama and could also be felt in the prefectures of Kyoto, Nara and Osaka, where it registered 3 on the seismic scale.

There have been no reports so far of major damage or injuries to persons or property as a result of the quake, and no tsunami warning has been issued by the JMA.

Kansai Electric Power Company has not reported any abnormalities at its plants in the Kansai region of Japan. Enditem
