What's the best Christmas gift for a football fan? A jersey, an autograph, or a ticket of an important game? Swedish football club AIK had offered a new option: DNA of the club's former captain.
For 3,499 Swedish krona (about 387 U.S. dollars) fans can buy a gift set which includes a tube of crystallised DNA of the club's former captain Nils-Eric Johansson, a captain's armband with Johansson's face on it and a certificate of authenticity.
"You can bring your favorite player home with you, keep him and have them for a very long time. A lot of fans love to collect things -- this could be one of those things," Johansson told BBC.
There are 371 boxes of Johansson's DNA for sale, one for each game he played for AIK since he joined the club in 2007 until his retirement earlier this year due to a heart defect.
"Each box represents one game I have played in. There a lot of stories in one box," he said.
Johansson added that part of his DNA was removed to prevent illegal behavior. "You would not be able to put my DNA on a crime scene for instance, as it would not match perfectly, so you could tell it wasn't me," he said.
It is reported that some of the proceeds will be donated to a charity in Sweden.
