China successfully carried out its first test of 4K Ultra High-Definition (HD) video transmission using a 5G-based network in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, on Sunday.
China Media Group (CMG), together with China Mobile, and Huawei completed this task, marking another breakthrough after the announcement to build the first national-level 5G new media platform in December 2018.
The technology will be used in live broadcasting in a separate Shenzhen studio during the 2019 Spring Festival Gala, to ensure the programs performed in Beijing and Shenzhen could be transmitted between both cities in ultra HD.
5G, the next-generation mobile Internet connectivity, is theoretically 100 times faster than 4G, and 66 times faster than WiFi, and also shows much better performance in latency, coverage and reliability.
According to CMG's development plan for a 5G-based new media platform, a 5G media laboratory will be launched during the "Two Sessions" this year to accelerate the application of 4K Ultra HD video and push innovation in other video-based products. Meanwhile, 5G live broadcasting of 4K Ultra HD video signal will be realized in 10 pilot cities simultaneously.
