One dead and at least five were missing as a heavy rainstorm hit east China's Jiangxi Province and trapped hundreds, local authorities said Sunday.

The downpour started at around 3 p.m. on Sunday in a mountainous area in Gaohu Town of Yichun City and trapped 245 self-organized tourists, according to the Jiangxi provincial emergency management bureau.

As of 9:40 p.m. Sunday, rescue forces have evacuated 200 people and rescued 28, with 11 transferred down the mountain.

Six unorganized self-driving vehicles were also caught by the rain, with one confirmed safe. Five others remain trapped so far, with passengers onboard still missing. Rescue work is underway.
