China's capital city Beijing is expected to build over 10,000 5G base stations by the end of 2019, the overseas edition of the People's Daily reported on Wednesday.
Statistics show China Tower, China's telecommunications tower infrastructure service provider, has completed construction and delivered 7,863 5G base stations, and operators opened 6,324 5G base stations at the end of July in Beijing, according to the Beijing Communications Administration.
Multiple measures are ongoing and expected to be taken to further promote the construction of 5G infrastructure, the municipal telecom authority said.
To guarantee the high-quality development of 5G technology, procedure standards have been developed throughout the planning process. A special plan for 5G infrastructure construction has been made by Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources and Beijing Communications Administration.
The plan covers development status, aim, overall plan, key areas and implementation suggestions for building 5G infrastructure systems including base stations, office buildings, pipelines and power.
Specific requirements for buildings have been made in line with the development of 5G technology, according to a specification for the mobile communication infrastructure of buildings, taking effect on July 1.
5G base stations have been constructed in key areas, including and surrounding area the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing in Yanqing district of city, Shougang Park, home of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics organizing committee, and Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City along Chang'an street.
The 5G network will also be put into use when the newly-built Beijing Daxing International Airport begins operation at the end of September, the report said.
5G technology development will be led by typical applications including 5G 8K HD video, 5G telemedicine and 5G autopilot, while 5G infrastructure construction in relative areas will also be strengthened.
Having selected 34 different light poles in different regions, a beta-test of 5G base station construction using urban light poles has also been carried out, and the construction of 5G base stations on 15 light poles has now entered the final implementation stage in Beijing.
About 20,000 5G base stations were built nationwide in China by the end of June, with 90 percent of these base stations in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, according to a report by business news portal 21jingji.com.
5G technology is expected to create more than 8 million job opportunities and 2.9 trillion yuan ($412 million) in economic added value by 2030, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology said.
The academy also projected the 5G industry will make a direct contribution to about 6 percent of the country's GDP by 2030.
